WHY ARE OUR STATUES COVERED UP?

The Statues in the church have been veiled, this is an ancient tradition of the church
as we enter deeper into Lent.

There is a point in the Gospels when Our Lord, having taught and worked openly, hides His face and works in a more hidden way:

Jesus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews (Jn 11:54)

We then enter into this mystery and veil (where we can the faces of Our Lord,
Our Lady and the Saints.

The images are still there behind the Veils.

Our Lord concealed Himself from
the public, but He was still working.

In the same way, God might seem veiled
to us at some points, we don’t feel His presence, or have difficulty seeing his influence in our life – but He is still there, working, healing and sanctifying us.

As we enter this deeper period of Lent
we can search for the face of God more passionately in the scriptures, in our prayer and most of all in receiving the sacraments.

This way we can see Him as He wants
to be seen by His closest disciples.
